Warum gibt es Dufte in Berlin?
Because we didn’t want to be anywhere else.
Berlin is the city where our first apartments were, our first restaurants, bars, and clubs, our first favorite evenings. The city that shaped us. Here, we learned what hospitality means when it isn’t staged. What a good evening is worth when no one is trying to sell it as an “experience.” What spaces can become when you trust them.
Berlin is changing. Faster than some would like. What we love about this city should remain: the gritty alongside the beautiful, the improvised alongside the precise, the melting pot of East and West, the club culture that belongs to no one. The possibility of stepping into three different worlds in a single evening—and feeling at home in all of them.
Dufte doesn’t try to preserve this spirit—it tries to carry it forward.
What makes Kantstrasse so special for Dufte?
Kantstrasse is not a street that sells itself. It has grown, endured, and carries stories—Chinese restaurants next to corner shops, third-generation businesses alongside cafés that opened last year. This is where Berlin happens in a way that interests us: naturally, casually, and honestly.
And then there is the Kant Garage Palace. A building from the late 1920s, constructed for a future that, at the time, was the automobile. One of the oldest surviving multi-story garages in Europe, a protected historic landmark, featuring a double helix that tells the story of an entire construction boom in a single movement. A piece of Berlin Modernist architecture that has never lost its strength—and a lighting design that brings new life and breath to the concrete.
Opening something new in this building is an honor that does not leave us indifferent. We are not guests here. We are responsible for this place.
What is Dufte’s vision?
We want to create a place people look forward to returning to. Not a place to pass through. Not a place to check off a list. A place where people who haven’t had the same day end up at the same table. Where the bread, the hummus, and the beer are genuinely good. Where the cultural program surprises without demanding effort.
What happens here doesn’t happen because of the food alone. It happens because we are here. Because people meet, inspire one another, enjoy themselves, and come back again.
Everything we do should be handmade, regionally minded, and served on equal footing. Confident, but never arrogant.
Dufte is never a finished product. We see ourselves as a project in constant evolution, and we want to be surprised—by what the city brings, by the people who gather here, and sometimes even by ourselves.
Who is behind Dufte?
Behind Dufte are various Berlin-based networks and people: the experience design studio FictionFactory (space & design), the Berlin agency Better Life (culture, events & programming), and expertise from the Holzmarkt ecosystem. Together with five independent Berlin kitchens—Abuya, Domberger Brot-Werk, Mani in Pasta, Tacho, and The Curried Cactus—the owner of the Kant Garage Palace, GÄDEKE & SONS GmbH, as well as many people and supporters from a wide range of trades, Berlin’s new culinary cultural house is taking shape. Dufte is also the first German project of the Mosaik Hospitality Group, which operates various food and beverage concepts in Austria and England.
The fact that most of us come from this city is no coincidence. Dufte has grown out of Berlin’s networks, enriched by an international perspective that adds depth without disconnecting it from its roots.
Dufte is here to stay.
Not in the sense that nothing changes—but in the sense that we are reliable. Anyone who walks in five years from now should still recognize us. Different, perhaps, but unmistakable. Those who return should find something familiar—and something that wasn’t there before.
We don’t want to be a trend—we want to be a place that lasts. By and for Berlin. A culinary cultural house that lives and breathes. Constantly evolving, yet always familiar.
